Katherine Munro, Silk Painter

Katherine Munro was born in Newfoundland and started painting and drawing at a very young age. She studied with various Newfoundland artists in her teens and as a young adult spent almost 3 years studying Fine Art in Mexico. She has primarily been a Watercolor Painter for most of her life until recently has switched to Silk Painting and dyeing on fabric as her preferred medium. She has exhibited at various galleries in Newfoundland and sells her silk paintings and scarves through many craft shops in Atlantic Canada.

“I love painting the silk scarves because they allow me to be very spontaneous and loose. I found I was getting too tight and conceptual with my watercolors and drawings. I was looking for a medium that would demand more playfulness and immediacy. I work with the basics such as color and pattern. The brilliance of color that I can achieve with the dyes is unparalleled and the silk fabric is so luxurious to work with! My inspiration comes from being in the Here-and-now and working with passionate color combinations. I often have no idea what I’m going to paint until I stand over the silk and just go with whatever comes to mind in the moment. I work in the latest fashion colors and every silk scarf is a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art."
