The scarf may have a bit of a stiff feel after all of that dying and salting but after you have steamed, washed and ironed it, it will regain it's original soft feel.
So, the direct method is an easy method that even a 7 year old can do! I usually teach this method to any beginners because you can't really make mistakes with it. Any so-called mistakes just become part of the design. The only thing that can go wrong is if you over work it and the colors run too much into each other creating a mucky mess.
It's important to get used to the dyes and how they react with the silk before moving on to using a resist technique. Resist can be tricky and mistakes are common at first and hard to cover up.
